SUSAN PALMA NIDEL

Susan Palma Nidel is widely recognized as one of the most important and versatile flutists of her generation. A founding member of the North Country Chamber Players, she traveled the world, and often appeared as a soloist and chamber musician, as a member of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra between 1980 and 2022. Susan is featured
prominently on Orpheus’ Grammy Award winning ‘Shadow Dances’ recording, as well as their universally acclaimed Ives and Copland albums, which both received Grammy nominations. Susan’s recording of Mozart’s Flute Concertos, with harpist, Nancy Allen and Orpheus, was named the “finest recording of these works to date” by Gramophone
Magazine. In addition, Ms. Nidel has also served as the principal flute of the American Composers Orchestra, Speculum Musicae, Martha Graham and Paul Taylor Dance Companies, Santa Fe Opera and Madeira Bach Festival. A distinguished advocate for
World Music, since 2012, Susan has collaborated with legendary international stars Branford Marsalis, Pablo Ziegler, Hector del Curto, Pedro Joia, Ivan Lins, and the Borromeo String Quartet to create four solo albums featuring music from South America
and Portugal. Her latest project, ‘A Tempo’, which also showcases the talents of two North Country favorites, guitarist Pedro Joia and bandoneonist, Hector del Curto, highlights the music of Lisbon, Buenos Aires and New York, and is scheduled for
imminent release. As a teacher, Susan serves on the faculty of Columbia University, has given master classes around the globe and has been an active and joyful participant in the Chamber Players’ in-school residencies and free lessons programs since 1981. Outside of music, Susan is well-known for her passion for photography and lives in New York and New Hampshire with her husband Richard Nidel, an attorney, music lover, impresario and avid collector of world club team soccer hats.
