A ROMANTIC WINTERLUDE

WINTER CONCERT

Our February Winterlude features three masterpieces composed approximately one hundred years apart. In 1785, after completing his six string quartets dedicated to Haydn, Mozart set out to explore a new genre: the piano quartet. His two masterpieces, the G minor, and the Eb Major, in this new formation set the standard for all composers to emulate. Fast-forward ninety-four years to 1879 when Cesar Franck composes his Piano Quintet, a masterwork of unbridled passion. The Quintet was dedicated to Saint-Saens who played the piano in the 1880 Paris premiere. Fast-forward another ninety-nine years and the Estonian composer, Arvo Part, pens his ethereal lullaby, Spiegel im Spiegel (Mirror in Mirror). Parts contemplative, otherworldly style seeks to unite the ancient with the modern ages.
