SUMMARY:Winter Winds
DESCRIPTION:Come celebrate Winterlude 2025 with the North Country Chamber Players as they debut a new concert space with a program that illuminates the beauty and versatility of woodwinds and brass instruments over three centuries. Beethoven’s magnificent Quintet for piano and winds was one of his own signature pieces as a performer and\, during the past 47 seasons\, it has become one of the Chamber Players’ important signature pieces\, as well.  Inspired by Mozart’s work\, composed only ten years earlier\, for the same combination\, the young\, pre-symphonic Beethoven infused this piece with his own singular personality\, featuring some of the thrilling\, rhapsodic and often humorous qualities that marked many of his subsequent works. The French Romantic composer\, Paul Taffanel\, won an important composition competition with his Woodwind Quintet in 1876\, a work that was praised for its elegant melodies\, rhythmic drive\, brilliant virtuosity and compelling timbral combinations.  Harvard-trained Randall Thompson’s charming\, neoclassical Suite for oboe\, clarinet and viola\, will round out this uplifting afternoon. \nThe North Country Chamber Players have adopted a “Pay-What-You-Wish” ticket pricing for concerts. Seating is limited\, so attendees are asked to make free online reservations. The recommended ticket price is $25\, payable at the door\, but there is no minimum ticket price required for entry. \n\n\nPlease Click Here for more information and to make your Reservation!

SUMMARY:Musical Royalty\, featuring Reiko Uchida on piano
DESCRIPTION:Throughout the Renaissance\, Baroque and Classical periods in western Europe\, all professional musicians were employed either by the Church or a Royal Court and were considered part of the servant class. In the spirit of the French Revolution\, Beethoven was the first musician\, or artist of any kind\, to reject the notions of birthrights and social hierarchies and pave the way for future generations\, like the 19th century German composer\, Carl Reinecke\, to be honored and appreciated for their talents and accomplishments alone. Edward Elgar\, perhaps the culmination of this journey towards respect\, was knighted at Buckingham Palace in July 1904. On this program\, listeners will hear an early Piano Sonata of Beethoven’s described by one famous critic as “an exquisite little work\,” and Reinecke’s melodic and lyrical Trio that showcases the oboe and horn in their best light. Finally\, Sir Edward’s unabashedly romantic Piano Quintet is often lush\, sometimes ghostly or serene\, but always eloquent and dramatic. \nReiko Uchida\, “Refined and exquisite” \n— The New York Times \nReiko Uchida is a pianist of rare poetic quality. While she commands a formidable technique\, it is always her spiritual connection to the music that projects. \nThe North Country Chamber Players have adopted a “Pay-What-You-Wish” ticket pricing for concerts. Seating is limited\, so attendees are asked to make free online reservations.\nThe recommended ticket price is $25\, payable at the door\, but there is no minimum ticket price required for entry. \n  \nReserve your seat here!

SUMMARY:Brahms’ Personal Favorite: Viola Quintet in F
DESCRIPTION:Brahms’ Viola Quintet in F might not be considered his most famous chamber work\, but it was his own personal favorite\, writing to his publisher\, Simrock\, upon submission\, “You have never before had such a beautiful work from me!” Following the example of Mozart\, he added a second viola to a string quartet and created a spirited work of bright cheerfulness that features a radiant first movement\, a stately and deeply expressive slow movement and a powerful finale that has been described by critics as the “crown of this work\, a magnificent masterpiece.” The program opens with a charming work by a Mozart contemporary\, Antonin Vranický\, that also features two violas\, as well as flute and oboe. A sublimely meditative Sarabande from the ‘Phantasy Quintet’ of the English master\, Ralph Vaughn Williams\, completes the offerings.

SUMMARY:Summer Serenade
DESCRIPTION:The earliest serenades were usually sung at night to express love and devotion.\nThis tradition continued through the Baroque and Classical periods\, but really reached its pinnacle with the sophisticated multi-movement works of the Romantic era performed for larger audiences. In Brahms’ Serenade in D\, he channels Mozart\, Haydn and Schubert\, but never sets aside his own Romantic sensibilities. This expansive\, jubilant\, song-like\, somber\, stately and galloping piece is contrasted on the program by Carl Nielsen’s brief and humorous Serenata in vano. \n  \nFranz Schubert/Abrahamson: Four Moments Musicaux for winds and strings \nCarl Nielsen: Serenata in vano for clarinet. bassoon\, horn\, ‘cello and double bass \nJohannes Brahms/Nex: Serenade No. 1 in D Major\, Op. 11 \n  \nThe North Country Chamber Players have adopted a “Pay-What-You-Wish” ticket pricing for concerts. Seating is limited\, so attendees are asked to make free online reservations.\nThe recommended ticket price is $25\, payable at the door\, but there is no minimum ticket price required for entry.
